I have just started using pyTivo and Handbrake, so please excuse the noob questions. I have a TivoHD as my main settop box and my computer is a Mac Mini. I am trying to rip/convert DVDs so I can watch them using pyTivo, usually using streaming mode to the Tivo. I have searched for info on recommended settings for Handbrake to convert the DVD files for this application, but haven't found anything really definitive. I have experimented with a few presets in Handbrake (such as Television & Film) but the results have been a bit pixelated. I have seen some posts suggesting the use of mp4 format and mpeg-4 codec.

Could someone give me what they consider the best Handbrake settings to use? I'm looking for good quality video but I'd like to get decent conversion speed as well. Thanks.

Use and MP4 container and check the large file size and web optimized boxes, h264 video at the same framerate as the source, one pass encode, constant quality of about 60%, keep source size. For audio use AC3 passthrough. Resulting mp4 file should push or stream fine to a tivoHD. Note that this does not work for HD sources, only SD such as from a DVD.

What would settings be for an HD source?

There are none as Handbrake is incapable of encoding ac3 audio. DVD material already has an ac3 track compaitble with tivo so passing it through works. Most HD video sources have audio tracks that are not compatible and handbrake is not capable of reencoding them.

I suggest if moving to HD video you get to know MeGUI for processing your files for Tivo. Not as easy to learn but it works very well. You can ask here on this forum for specific help regarding use to encode for tivo.
