I don't know if anyone else has attempted this. But I recently thought that a movie trailers plugin that used http://www.hd-trailers.net/ as the source of the movies would be pretty cool.

A lot of the work has already been done by other people such as the rss reader.

I have no idea if you can pipe a download into ffmpeg, but I assume you can somehow. I also don't know what would happen if the download speed could not keep up with what TiVo demanded.

Anyone else have any ideas or has anyone attempted this before?

I don't have much free time ahead so I doubt I will get to this very soon, but I thought it was a cool idea.

I have been wanting to do something similar to this but only instead of stream it I want to download it first and then pull on demand when I want more detail about a movie.

The challenge I have with Apple trailers site (http://www.apple.com/trailers/) is the very nice search method they use and how it is tough to automate it. The HD Trailers site is better and could be scraped a bit easier but it uses google as a search engine for the site so you have to scrape that as well.

I haven't had the time lately to work on my auto-download trailers project but integrating into pytivo would be a worthy exercise. It should be a plugin so pytivo doesn't become a do-everything program and massive bundle of code.

Just thinking out loud,
Chris

Completely agree, this is actually the ideal use of a plugin.

Unfortunately I am way short on time recently, so I will only be doing this a few hours if that a week.

I was thinking just making it an alphabetical list of Movies, and maybe a folder of recent trailers. I dunno, also just thinking out loud.

To get somewhat the same functionality, I installed a proof of concept version of a program called HD Movie Trailer Downloader, http://hdmtd.codeplex.com It's an open-source Windows program which pulls HD trailers from either apple or yahoo sites. The UI and documentation are a bit sketchy. The package has three programs; a global configuration and database configuration, an auto-downloader, and gui app. After I configured the download location, I added the download directory to pyTivo. I launched and configured the auto-downloader and it pulled down about 50 trailers. I went to my Tivo and was able to download and watch trailers. I know it's a Windows only program, but it is open source and might provide some insight to someone writing a pyTivo plugin.
