So what range would you recomend staying within?

I'm probably butchering this explanation, but here goes. DRC tries to normalize the audio so that background sounds become closer in volume to the main audio. It also reduces the bass a bit to avoid the buzzing you might get from smaller, weaker speakers.

It works ok to make a surround sound movie easier to hear on a small set of TV speakers, but you pretty much never want it on if you have full range speakers because it makes things sound softer and more bunched together.

rdian06-- fully agree with what you're saying, and agree that you rarely if ever want it if you can hook your system up to a hifi system. I'm using a S2 box and it's exclusively used with the TV speakers, so DRC is highly desirable. I'll just have to play with it I guess to see what a good range is. Again, I suspect somewhere between 0.5 and 0.8 will be appropriate...

thanks!

If a lot of people like me are still having issues with MKV audio, specifically with the timestamp monotonicity error or audio constantly dropping in and out I found a really easy way to fix it fast. Here's how:

1. Download a freeware program called MKV2AC3 @ http://www.videohelp.com/download/mkv2ac3_b5.rar

2. Open MKV2AC3 and click 'add'. Select the video file in question.

3. You may get an error claiming it's unable to load the file; ignore it and click OK.

4. You may get another error claiming "Invalid Movie"; ignore it and click OK.

5. The video will now be loaded regardless of the errors. You have two options. You can either set advanced options under the "audio options" tab or you can just hit "START". Unless you know exactly what you're doing just hit "START".

For a 1.5GB MKV file it took me one minute to complete. Obviously a 10gb+ file will take longer. After it's complete you'll see a new video file with "ac3" appended to the file name. Use that on Pytivo and you shouldn't have anymore audio issues.

Hope this helps! Smile

This program, along with others for windows and linux convert the DTS audio track to AC3 and add the AC3 track as a second audio stream. These programs/scripts are necessary for the first gen WD TV and the Popcorn Hour A100 (among others) as they don't have DTS codec support and output no audio on MKV files with only DTS audio (very common on downloaded movies/shows).

All the newest gen devices have since added the required DTS codec support and pay the (I hear $20-$25) licensing fee to enable this on the Sigma decoding chip so this is becoming less and less needed.

However, ffmpeg has pretty decent DTS support and this shouldn't be required for normal or even making it more stable in playback. If you were to use this, you would also need to configure pyTivo to prefer AC3 track over DTS since most of these DTS2AC3 programs append the AC3 track which means they aren't the first track and unless otherwise directed, pyTivo uses the first Audio track. Example of appended AC3 audio track (dca=dts in ffmpeg speech):
Code:
FFmpeg version SVN-r20889, Copyright (c) 2000-2009 Fabrice Bellard, et al.
  built on Dec 17 2009 09:34:16 with gcc 4.4.1
Input #0, matroska, from 'District 9 (1080p BluRay Rip 2009).mkv':
  Duration: 01:52:15.74, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A
    Stream #0.0(eng): Video: h264, yuv420p, 1916x1038, PAR 1:1 DAR 958:519, 24.39 fps, 23.98 tbr, 1k tbn, 47.95 tbc
    Stream #0.1(eng): Audio: dca, 48000 Hz, 6 channels, s16
    Stream #0.2(eng): Subtitle: 0x0000
    Stream #0.3: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 6 channels, s16

Maybe you have other issues that are masked by this conversion? Are you running an older version of ffmpeg? An older release of pytivo? I generally have no issues with MKV "audio" or to be more specific, DTS audio tracks so ffmpeg/pyTivo CAN be made to work well without having to go through this interim conversion.

Also, a filename with a .ac3 appended to it is the AC3 audio track only and will have no video. pyTivo will not display this file in the Video NPL but would allow it to be transferred as an audio file (ala mp3/wma/ogg support) if configured.
What I imagine is happening is it is transferring your newly modified MKV file instead but now it has DTS + AC3 support and either through your preferences or pyTivo defaults it is instead choosing the AC3 track to use. End result hopefully is better support but as it has a 448kbps AC3 audio track in addition to the 640kbps DTS it is a larger filesize and requires a pre-processing step.

I am not saying what you are doing won't work or is wrong, I am just trying to add some explanation, some suggestions for resolving the root issue if possible, and letting you know that the .ac3 file is not your new file that is what will work instead.

Note: I have contributed to the linux based mkvdts2ac3.sh script (initially conceived by Jake Wharton) and recently did a rewrite with a few new features. Full disclosure and all in case it matters. Wink

I've got to admit, what I know about video/audio encoding can pretty much be summed up in a couple hours of first hand "problems" I've had with messing with Pytivo/FFMPEG. So bare with me. Embarassed

Unless I've read something that's really out of date though in this thread there was some people complaining about audio tracks which would result in ffmpeg giving a "timestamp monotonicity error". rdian06 fixed this and released a patch for it but it resulted in the audio dropping randomly. rdian06 posted a workaround but it sometimes doesn't work. From what I gathered it's a bug in ffmpeg and has yet to be fixed. I think it's related to corrupted audio tracks that will play fine in VLC but ffmpeg has issues with? Honestly, I could be wrong here. I've read a ton and will be the first to admit much of it is over my head when it comes to the technical aspects of it.

I realized I was a bit vague about the type of file MKV2AC3 outputted. It actually outputs a video file but in MKV format; it's just that it renames it to show "-ac3" in the file name. So if the file inputted was "test.mkv" it would output "test-ac3.mkv". It does briefly produce an "ac3" file but it deletes it after it's done. From what I've gathered its just a quick way to re-encode the audio but I could be wrong. I just stumbled on the fact it fixes my audio issue. Luckily this issue is very rare but it does pop up from time to time. (Mostly in MKV encoded TV shows; I've never seen it happen with movies) The thing is my last video file actually was originally ac3 and suffered from this bug. Once I ran it through this program it worked fine though.

By the way, I've got the 12/21 SVN of ffmpeg and wmcbrines latest fork so I'm definitely up to date. Depending on the SVN of ffmpeg though the bug will vary. If I used my 12/21 SVN it'll refuse to encode with the above error. If I compile it with rdian06's patch it'll start encoding but you'll see a TON of buffer errors and it'll result in audio being dropped constantly. (It sounds like someones turning the volume on and off every second or so)

I haven't tried MKV2AC3 yet, but I did read up on it the other day.

The issue that some are finding is that ffmpeg has issues with remuxing some AC3 audio from the MKV container to the VOB container. Generally things work, but their are outliers. On these outliers, remuxing causes the audio to have periodic dropouts with a frequency of 5 to 10 seconds. It's very annoying and makes the video unwatchable.

The workaround for these has been to force pyTivo to transcode from AC3 to AC3 which in most cases works fine. The people affected by this are using default.txt metadata files to force AC3 to always be transcoded even when it could be remuxed.

As a result of transcoding all AC3, people are now finding files where the ffmpeg AC3 decoder produces bad audio at a certain point and then corrupts the decoding from that point through the rest of the stream. I've tracked down one of the problems in the decoder and have a fix for it, but it's not the only one. And I have a test track that I just can't get ffmpeg to decode properly, but if I remux it and send to the Tivo, the Tivo decodes it properly - go figure.

What sgr215 is suggesting is using MKV2AC3 essentially to transcode AC3 to AC3 and fix whatever it is that is causing the audio dropout issues and ffmpeg AC3 decoder issues by making the MKV stream more well behaved. MKV2AC3 calls it normalizing the AC3 track - I guess because it's trying to even out the volume levels. Again, I haven't tried it yet but I can see how it would deal with issues that some are encountering.

I plan to give it a test spin when I get some free time again, well if I get some free time again...

For what it's worth I've tested it on three one hour long videos thus far that suffered the bug and all three played perfectly fine from beginning to end. Obviously this is far from a thorough test but I'm definitely happy with MKV2AC3 thus far.

I have been using pyTivo for many moons, but I have never messed around with metadata so I am clueless on how to do this. What file do I need to edit to make this change? Are there detailed instructions anywhere?

Thanks!

If your video file is named "vidEo.mkv", then the metadata file should be named "vidEo.mkv.txt".

More info on metadata is here:

Ok, that makes sense. However, when I added the metadata file pytivo barfed, and I end up with an empty file (time 0:00) on the Tivo. The metadata file contains one line:

Override_aKbps : 640

Here's the info from the pyTivo window - any guess what I need to do to get this to work?

You clipped out the ffmpeg command line that caused the ffmpeg output and subsequent error message.

Please repost the full output again, but this time ONLY black out your TSN and any username/passwords that might appear.

Hmm... I didn't clip anything from the output, so I am not sure why the information that you are looking for is not there. Here's another try. I set debug=true this time.

FYI, here is the most recent ffmpeg bug track on the "non monotone timestamp" issue that's forcing us to use the audio transcode override and leading to other issues:

https://roundup.mplayerhq.hu/roundup/ffmpeg/issue807

No solution yet. I've tested the two patches provided, but they don't fix the problem files that others have reported.

While we all love and appreciate FOSS this is truly a case of one of the downsides. It is coming up on a year now and this major (IMO) bug is still open. Let's hope this will get some attention soon and finally be put to bed. I think this is the last of my main issues when something doesn't transfer correctly or doesn't transfer. I am limping along with the Override command but it sure would be nice to get this fixed!

Great post BTW. Did we mention how much you add to this community rdian06? Every post you make is insightful and full of great information! Ok, enough ego boosting. Wink

rdian06, have you had any luck building one of your special compiled ffmpeg versions for OS X Intel? I'd love to use that instead of compiling from scratch if it's available. Thanks!

Update: In looking at some more recent threads, it appears that the patches for the correct channel order are no longer necessary. Is this correct? If that's the case, I think this newbie might be able to compile a straight-up ffmpeg on his own.
