Since I haven't been around long enough to know all the development history, please pardon this question if it's been asked before. I couldn't find any answers through searching here and TCF..

I assume TivoDesktop (free) doesn't support "publishing" your own media from your PC to your Tivo, but that it requires TivoDesktopPLUS to do so... I don't have plus, so I can't try this...

But it sounded like from several other discussions that the TivoDesktop sodtware can "publish" media and create folders that the Tivo recognizes, and that the created folders are honored through tivo "pull's" of media published by TivoDesktopPlus. Is that a correct understanding?

In other words, can a grouping folder be created by tivodesktopplus and then be used to group pulls by pytivo? If so, I'd consider it worth the $25 pricetag just to have a way to create arbitrary folders (such as the "1. Movies (Kids)" folder that I'm trying to use) and then use pytivo's pull for all the metadata stuff (unless tivodesktopplus supports all the necessary metadata tags also?).

I'm not trying to undermine pytivo, please don't misunderstand-- I'm just trying to get media to my own arbitrary folder, but also using arbitrary "recordedOn" dates to display them in a certain order.

Does anybody have tivodesktopplus to try this, or has this already been tried before?

thanks,
..dane

Why don't you just modify the metadata and sort by name rather than date?

I don't think so, no. As far as I know, there's no difference between the folders created by TD+ and those made by pyTivo, and I can't see why there would be. Unless this is something new with 2.8?

Not as of 2.7, and it's not mentioned as a new feature of 2.8 (but I haven't tried 2.8 yet).

He wants the folders on the TiVo sorted by name, and the TiVo won't do that -- only the top-level list responds to the date-sort/name-sort option; the folders always sort by date. Hence his kludge.

Oh bummer. And here I was thinking I was getting close to a solution..

It's interesting that Tivo, Inc. doesn't encourage more features to put content on the Tivo. I can understand them not wanting to allow easy access to remove content, but it would seem enabling the tivo as media server instead of just a time-shifting device would help them gain more marketshare... Idea

William (or do you go by Will?) said it right .. I want the Tivo box to be the media server. We don't have sufficient network bandwidth to properly stream real-time, and even if we did we don't have our (only) computer on all the time. I'd rather have all my content hosted on the Tivo HDD --- but I'd like to group them by type (kids movies, home videos, etc). Furthermore I'd really like to have the folder names themselves "named" in a certain way, so that the root NPL list places them at the top ("1. Movies (Kids)", etc). And items within the folder themsevles sort only by date-- which is why I came up with a hack to set the "date" based on the title, between years 1970 and 2216. Around 7.5billion seconds, allowing to "sort" on the first six characters of the title...

So I'm left with:

1) Push'ing content supports arbitrary folder creation, but not 'time' stamping.

2) Pull'ing content supports 'time' stamping but not arbitrary folder creation.

3) I could likely find some existing seriesId's that would work (Kidzone, Home Movies, etc), and then pull content to those folders, but then they're not sorted to the top of the root NPL the way I'd like them to be.

Cool

Not being a python coder, and not having sufficient experience sniffing network traffic, I'm at the mercy of those much smarter than me like the pytivo developers to help me achieve my goals.

Option (3) above seems the easiest route at this point, but I was really hoping that a solution could be found to either options (1) or (2) so that I get everything I'm looking for.

Hey now, one mans' kludge is another man's solution! Smile I haven't taken a poll but I think that I'm not the only one who'd be interested in that feature. Since you already implemented "time:file" and "time:oad" it wouldn't be that hard to implement "time:title" or something like that. I've already ported the algorithm from excel to vbscript to generate the date from the title string.. (nudge, nudge) Smile

cheers,
..dane
